Merry Weather, Merry Women
by Colleen Rochette
My much-loved Mum boarded a fast train; she traveled south to New York for the Easter weekend. In the spirit of a Holiday that we do not religiously celebrate, we still managed to fill my kitchen with the most enticing aromas and piled my apartment windowsills high with a rainbow of orchids and flowers. In preference, we set aside our Easter baskets to make room to construct our very own Vanda baskets; and rather than having fuzzy bunnies, my felines Uni and Ora bounced afoot.
After visiting the Philadelphia Flower Show for my mid-winter orchid fix, I decided that it would be lovely to rubberneck at some of these beauties in a more botanical atmosphere. Upon receiving a verbal smile from my Mum, our plans were then scribbled in concrete.
On a genuine Spring day, we slow-poked our way up to the Bronx. Unwary of a winter that had just been laid to rest, the sun burst through the picturesque blue skies at the New York Botanical Garden. We both turned a cheek upward to momentarily bask in the rays.
Assuredly, these photos are just as lovely as the plethora of flora that enveloped us in these conservatories! The sheer volume of orchids was heart-stirring; the sun graced absolutely everything within her reach. While our eyes were feasting on these blossomy fixings, our little noses were being pummeled by the most divine fragrance from the mammoth Gardenia ‘trees’ that were in full bloom!
This luscious day was indeed heaven-sent.
